In an era of increasing disconnection, Barbara Bray’s “Grow Your Why: One Story at a Time” arrives when many of us find ourselves questioning our life’s direction. This anthology of twenty-three personal stories doesn’t promise easy answers, but it offers something perhaps equally valuable: the reassurance that we’re not alone in our search for meaningful lives, and plenty of stories with helpful wisdom for finding our way.
In this unique new book, Bray, who has a background as a creative learning strategist and podcast host, has assembled diverse voices that speak to very different circumstances to share their experiences. Some contributors describe sudden moments of clarity that shaped their worldview, others detail slow realizations that unfolded over years. This variety prevents the book from feeling formulaic or prescriptive. Readers will likely recognize themselves in some stories more than others, but that’s precisely the point—there’s no single path to purposeful living.
My morning read time has been spent with Barbara Bray's "Grow Your Why" - and what a gift it's been during this season of transition. This collection of 23 stories from educators and changemakers does something I didn't expect: it reminded me why teachers matter so deeply, especially now when it feels like everything is shifting beneath our feet.
Barbara doesn't just champion teachers - she gives them full-throated endorsement, honoring their craft and their calling. Each contributor shares the pivotal moments that shaped their Why, and it sparked questions for me about my own "Why". The book is organized beautifully: Define Your Why, Journey Your Why, Grow Your Why - a roadmap for anyone feeling a little lost or questioning their path. In her podcast, Rethinking Learning, the power of teaching, storytelling and resilience in the face of change is brought to vivid and delightful life through Barbara's generous and insightful hosting.
What strikes me most in this book is how these stories become mirrors. You read someone else's moment of clarity or struggle, and suddenly you're seeing your own life differently. It's storytelling as connection, as resilience, as meaning-making. And isn't that what we all need right now? Not another productivity hack, but permission to slow down and remember what matters.
If you're in transition - releasing something, beginning something, or just trying to find your feet - this book meets you exactly where you are
Wisdom and kindness grows from the hearts of each author who shares life experiences from our own communities. Thank you cheerleader Barbara Bray for lovingly collecting 23 stories from a rich diversity of people and places.
I’ve been reading Grow Your Why, exactly how it suggests in the title “One Story at a Time”. Our busy lives often make it a challenge to read a whole book in one sitting. This book is PERFECT for picking up to read one story (one chapter) about an incredible life, tucking in a bedtime bookmark, then coming back again and again for another life changing story.
I love Grow Your Why so much! In one book, we get to learn from amazing mentors who come together to weave a tapestry of shared genius! Many stories painfully grow resilience. All the feels as joyful humor and happy tears ultimately gift us twinkle eyed hope!
I’m grateful to contribute chapter 2 “Growing Great Generations”. In my chapter, I bring with me stories of my family and friends.
I am so proud to be a writer alongside so many remarkable people who have impacted communities. Mahalo Barbara Bray & Friends for making this journey possible!🙏🏼

This book shares the inspiring journeys from the educational field. Previously, I assumed that almost all teachers "felt the calling" or entered the field straight of out school and went into training then teaching immediately. To me, it seemed like teachers were simply born teachers.
This book is a great reminder that teachers are made. The very different and disparate experiences of these authors show various pathways and experiences along the way of their personal and professional journeys. Truly inspiring stories! This makes an impactful read for anyone considering their own journey and a wonderful gift for anyone in education.
Definitely a MUST read! Amazing stories of reflection- I have a student teacher this year and it’s a perfect end of the year gift! I love reading this book and being inspired from others!

Whether you're seeking inspiration, connection, or a deeper understanding of your own life, Grow Your Why offers a transformative reading experience.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to unlock the power of storytelling and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Because education is such an ‘institution’, we sometimes generalize our ideas of who a typical educator is within the walls of our classrooms across the nation. The heartfelt sharing of the life stories of each of the book's contributors left me with the feeling that we each have some untapped wonder and joy in our lives. So many found anchors for their lives in the appreciation of their parents and friends who gave them a life-long inner direction for their next steps forward in their journey.
Thank you Barbara Bray for bringing these stories to life in your new book, “Grow your Why”. It has taught me that we each have a unique story founded in that inner voice that grounds our choices in life—our why—and then grows it along life’s journey.
This talented and authentic author takes us through a process of discovery about ourselves through understanding the stories of others.
By looking through the eyes of another person, we may discover parts of ourselves that will benefit us on our own personal journey of self-awareness. This book helps us to weave the valuable lessons from the stories of others so we can also define, challenge, and grow our why.
Barbara Bray's "Grow Your Why" shares dozens of examples of the nuanced exploration of personal purpose. Her book is a collection of diverse stories, each a journey of self-discovery, be it in discovering, journeying, or growing one's "Why."
While Bray sets the scenes at the beginning and end of the book, she stays out of the storytellers’ narratives, though her presence is felt through the safe and caring space she has clearly created for them. As the storytellers share their life’s paths, they discover that telling their own stories fosters a stronger, more authentic, sense of self.
“Grow Your Why” is a powerful compilation of stories from amazing educators. Reading their stories, the 'how' behind their 'why' allows educators of all levels of experience and concentration to center themselves around their own story.
As I dove further into each personal element shared by these great people, I found myself reflecting on my journey, seeing awesome connections with others, and getting my soul ignited with passion. A must read for all educators!!
